How the factors work together

The five factors should be read as a hierarchy of explanation, not as five competitors. Begin with the observable rasa, identify the relevant guṇas, assess the vīrya, consider the vipāka, and finally ask whether a specific action remains unexplained.

When a question asks for rasa-pañcaka, present the five factors in the conventional order: rasa, guṇa, vīrya, vipāka and prabhāva.

Suppose a substance is described as tikta rasa (bitter taste), laghu guṇa (light quality), rukṣa guṇa (dry quality), uṣṇa vīrya (hot potency) and kaṭu vipāka (pungent post-digestive effect). These are not five repetitions of the same fact.

The bitter rasa tells you what is first perceived. The light and dry guṇas describe its qualities. Rasa is perceived at the beginning through taste; vipāka is assessed after digestion. The same substance can have one rasa and a different vipāka, so the two columns must never be filled by automatic repetition.

Guṇa versus vīrya

Guṇa describes an attribute such as heaviness, lightness, unctuousness or dryness. Vīrya describes the active potency through which the substance produces action; it may be taught as hot–cold or through a broader eightfold classification.

Vīrya versus prabhāva

Vīrya is the general active potency. Prabhāva is the specific effect that remains unexplained after considering rasa, guṇa, vīrya and vipāka. Calling every strong action “prabhāva” is a common but serious error.

Rasa versus karma

Rasa is a property or perceptual category; karma is the action produced by the substance. “Bitter” is not itself the complete action. A full answer connects rasa and the other factors to the stated karma.
